Suzani, which means needlework in
Persian, is the name given to large, embroidered textiles from Central Asia that
were used as hangings or bed covers. Suzane are remarkable objects, reflecting
in artistic form the traditional understanding of the universe, nature,
happiness and love.
"Zardevor" embroidered wall friezes. They were
embroidered as a Suzani and after the Suzani they are the next most common
embroidered item in Uzbek homes. Intended specifically for the interior of
houses they decorate the upper part of the front and side walls of a room. They
hang above colourful suzane, so their patterns often duplicate their ornamental
composition.
Decoration and Ornament: Zardevor has beautiful and various
patterns. The predominant type is represented by zardevor decorated with
rhythmically alternating large round medallions with patterns imitating almond
flowers, tulips and vegetative bines scattered between them similar to those on
suzane. Sometimes medallions are decoraled in a form of six-pointed or
eight-pointed star-shaped medallions.
