Suzani means needlework in persian. The best known
suzanis are the large ones, used as nuptial bedspreads, wall hangings
and more importantly for the decoration of rooms. Suzanis hold a very
special place in Uzbek culture. They are an intrical part of everyday
Uzbek life and especially during celebrations. Every girl had in her
dowry ten different embroidered articles for decorating her future home.
The bride was requiredd to do all this embroidery.The bride would
invite her friends over in the evenings to help her finish these
embroideries.This was called hoshar (help). Her friends sat through the
evenings placing one stitch to another in an intricate fanciful
ornament. All kind of The embroidery were made by hand. For
manufacturing Suzani it is required from an one and a half till two
years at very dense embroidery if the woman works from one till two
hours daily. The walls in Uzbek homes were decorated with velvet or
satin suzani and Zardevor picturesque embroidered with silk. Was no
Uzbek home without suzani. Without Suzani there is no Uzbek bride or no
uzbek holidays.
